Every year there are many high school quarterback prospects that make a name for themselves and garner massive attention from the biggest most prestigious colleges. What’s piqued my interest are the QBs that end up flying under the radar. While this is bound to happen with the amount of great athletes in Texas, that doesn’t mean these guys don't have the ability to make a huge impact for a college team. From my research and film breakdown, Canon Toon, the quarterback from Second Baptist, is one of these talented yet undiscovered players.

Elite Athleticism

The first thing that pops on film when watching Toon was his elite athletic ability. This is a guy who possesses the speed and agility to match even the best athletes at the college level. While the competition he plays may not match the larger programs in the state, when you turn on the tape it's blatantly obvious that he’s the best athlete on the field. He can use his pure speed to break from a muddied pocket to extend plays or take off, and he consistently uses his agility to maneuver the pocket and keep a dead play alive. Not only does he break away from defenders with speed, but rarely do you see the first tackler bring him down. The athleticism he brings with his game opens up a vital element for Second Baptist, and can do the same for many colleges. 

Arm Strength and Field Vision

First and foremost, Canon possesses an impressive arm that allows him to make throws outside the numbers with authority. In today’s game, the ability to stretch the field vertically and horizontally is crucial, and Toon excels in both areas. His deep ball is not just a threat; it’s a weapon that forces defenses to respect the entire field. This capability opens up opportunities for receivers and creates space for the run game.

In terms of vision and decision making, I’ve seen some impressive things from Toon. There have been multiple cases where I saw him look off a safety or linebacker with his eyes and fit a ball into a window that wouldn't have been there otherwise. While he obviously possesses some impressive elements when it comes to reading the field, there’s a lot he can still learn when he gets to the higher levels. Second Baptist doesn't run a particularly dynamic offense, and no one should expect them to. When it comes to the high school level, you’ll rarely find any offense that’s going to give their quarterback complex reads and route concepts. Assuming he has the work ethic, which from people I’ve spoken to is not going to be a problem whatsoever, he’ll learn the things he needs to take the raw talent he has and use it to make a massive impact at the college level.

Creative Throwing Mechanics

Another aspect that sets Toon apart is his ability to throw from awkward arm angles while maintaining precision. This skill is invaluable, especially in high-pressure situations where defenders are closing in. Whether he’s on the run or off-balance, Toon has shown he can deliver accurate passes, keeping the chains moving and making big plays. This creative throwing ability not only showcases his talent but also reflects his comfort level in the pocket.

Bootleg Rollouts as a Strategic Advantage

Toon thrives on bootleg rollouts, where the design of the play gives him the space to operate effectively. These plays capitalize on his speed and agility, allowing him to create throwing lanes while keeping defenders at bay. While they aren’t something that need a complete overhaul, there are times when he can speed up his release, resulting in the ball being overthrown. There are ways in his current release that he could tune up to allow more velocity to be placed on his passes when the pocket is clean.

While his mobility in the pocket is great, there are times where he will tend to drift in the pocket too quickly, making some throws more difficult to accomplish.
