Under the Radar: Jett Surratt

Under the Radar Series: Episode 2

Another week here at Game Winner HQ means diving into the film and engaging in heated debates about the top talent across the State of Texas. And this week, one name that stands out is Jett Suratt, a quarterback whose skill set is impossible to overlook. Suratt’s combination of deep ball accuracy, poise under pressure, and field awareness has already turned heads, but a closer look reveals just how much potential he has to make an impact at the next level. With offers from top programs and a playstyle that translates seamlessly to multiple systems, Suratt is a name to watch. Let’s break down what makes him one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects in the state.

Jett Surratt #9 Carthage High School

Jett Suratt is a highly intriguing quarterback prospect with a skill set that stands out in several key areas. His deep ball accuracy, ability to make throws under pressure, and impressive field awareness are all noteworthy traits that make him a promising talent at the next level.

Arm Talent & Deep Ball Accuracy

Suratt has a natural gift for throwing the deep ball, with the ability to place it precisely where it needs to be. His quick flick of the wrist allows him to generate the right amount of velocity, sending the ball downfield with accuracy and touch. When it comes to precision, I’m yet to see another quarterback match his pure accuracy on a go ball or a deep post. Regardless of the leverage the DB has, he is more likely than not going to put the ball right where it needs to be. He can hit a receiver who beats their man in stride, or add more air and put the ball outside the numbers when the defender matches his target. While he shows many impressive attributes, his acumen for the deep ball jumps off the tape more than anything.

Unfazed Under Pressure

Another attribute of Suratt’s game that jumped out to me is his ability to stay calm in the face of pressure. Even with defenders barreling down, he maintains his composure and will deliver the ball even when he's about to take a hit. Whether it’s a deep shot or a quick slant, Suratt is unfazed by defensive pressure. This calmness allows him to continue executing his game plan without allowing the rush to dictate his playmaking.

Comfortability Under Center & Timing with Receivers

Suratt is comfortable operating under center, showing an ability to take proper dropbacks to align with his receivers' routes. This allows him to execute plays with timing and precision. Whether it’s a quick timing route or a deeper developing play, Suratt’s footwork and pocket mechanics allow him to sync up seamlessly with his receivers.

Pocket Awareness & Field Vision

One of Suratt’s most important traits he possesses is his ability to navigate the pocket and stay within the timing of plays. He doesn’t bail out of the pocket prematurely, showing patience and trust in his offensive line. When scrambling, his field vision remains sharp as he looks downfield for open receivers, not allowing the chaos of the pocket to cloud his focus. His ability to read defenses and process coverages is advanced for a high school quarterback, as he doesn’t get caught staring down receivers. If the coverage is too tight, he moves on to his next read without forcing a bad throw. Compared to other quarterbacks his age, Suratt shows remarkable maturity in processing information and not locking onto a single target. His ability to read coverage and recognize defensive backs’ leverage allows him to make quick decisions and locate mismatches. This is an area where he truly separates himself from his peers.

Suratt is generally a strong decision-maker, with the ability to adjust his throw velocity based on the situation. He can fit balls into tight windows, especially on outside-the-numbers throws, demonstrating impressive arm strength. However, he occasionally errs on the side of lofting a ball when a more line-drive throw would be more appropriate. This slight inconsistency with ball placement could be an area for growth, particularly in situations where a faster, more direct pass is needed.

Mobility and Throwing on the Run

While Suratt excels in the pocket, he is also a threat when forced to scramble. His mobility allows him to flush out of the pocket without skipping a beat, and he can still deliver accurate throws on the move. His ability to make cross-body throws is impressive, showcasing both his athleticism and arm strength. Even when his initial read is taken away, Suratt’s ability to extend plays and keep his eyes downfield is a valuable asset.

Mechanics & Velocity

When Suratt gets his legs fully under him, his arm strength and velocity are on full display, allowing him to make all the necessary throws at a high level. However, there are times when he rushes his mechanics, which can lead to throws that hang in the air a little longer than desired. This is an area where he can improve, particularly in maintaining consistent mechanics with every throw.

Conclusion

For a series dedicated to finding the most underrated quarterbacks in the state of Texas it might seem weird to put a guy with a three star rating and offers from D1 colleges on this list, but I genuinely believe that this is an understatement for the talent he has.

Jett Suratt has extremely advanced film when it comes to high school quarterbacks. For a guy whose numbers are excellent, they don’t even tell the full story. He possesses traits that will transfer seamlessly to the college game. While he is listed as a pro style quarterback, he has the tools to not only fit a pro style system, but flourish in your classic air raid system. While there are definitely areas to improve upon when it comes to maintaining consistent mechanics, I have no doubt that with the right coaching and mindset, Suratt will be a force to reckon with at the collegiate level.
